چکیده

In this work we compute the effective action describing the low-energy brane Goldstone-boson dynamics. The Goldstone bosons or branons appear because the brane spontaneously breaks the translational invariance along the extra dimensions. We discuss the Higgs-like mechanism in which the KaluzaKlein gauge fields absorb the Goldstone bosons and acquire mass. We also present the explicit form of the effective action describing the low-energy interactions between the three-brane Goldstone bosons and the Standard Model fields. In addition to the branons, two new kinds of states arise corresponding to Skyrmion-like solutions and wrapped states. We study the main properties of these states, their geometrical interpretation and the relations between them. We investigate 4 + d dimensional fermionic models in which the system in codimension-d supports a topologically stable solution, and in which the fermion may be localised to the brane, with power law in ’instanton’ backgrounds and exponentially in ’soliton’ backgrounds. When the fermions are isoscalars, the mechanism fails, while for isospinor fermions it is successful. As backgrounds we consid...

Simple 4+d dimensional field theoretic models in which a 4 dimensional chiral Fermion field can be localised to the brane are analysed. The brane is defined by a d dimensional topological defect described by (i) an O(d + 1) sigma model, or (ii) a Goldstone model. When the defect has spherical symmetry, no solutions exist for d ≥ 2, leaving the d = 1 model of (ii) the only viable example of this...

We briefly review the distinctive signals of brane world models with low tension. We pay special attention to the brane fluctuations (branons), whose phenomenological consequences could be important both in high energy particle physics experiments and in astrophysical and cosmological observations. ∗Proceedings of the 29th Bienal Real Sociedad Española de F́ısica on the centennial of the society...

The minimal embedding of the Standard Model in type I string theory is described. The SU(3) color and SU(2) weak interactions arise from two different collections of branes. The correct prediction of the weak angle is obtained for a string scale of 6-8 TeV. Two Higgs doublets are necessary and proton stability is guaranteed. It predicts two massive vector bosons with masses at the TeV scale, as...

We investigate η-η ′ mixing in infrared regularized U (3) chiral perturbation theory by calculating the η and η ′ masses up to one-loop order. From this analysis it becomes obvious that even at leading order η-η ′ mixing does not obey the usually assumed one-mixing angle scheme if large N c counting rules are not employed.
